This policy has been drawn up after consultation between the NTF and NASS, and has the full support of both organisations. Its operation and effectiveness will be kept under review.
The NTF and NASS beleive that it is in everyone's interest to have a safe working environment. The misuse and abuse of alcohol, drugs and other substances can affect health, attendance, performance and relationships ar work, and the safety and welfare of people and horses.

These guidelines have been produced to help the Racing and Breeding Industries fulfil the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (MHSWR) 1999 and other associated legislation.
The Act and the Regulations set out an employer’s general duties of care towards employees, learners and others such as contractors and members of the public. It is also expected that both employers and employees should have care for their own health and safety and for the health and safety of colleagues and visitors.

The National Association of Stable Staff (formerly the SLA) is required by current Trade Union legislation to have all members complete a membership form, in order for you to have your full voting rights, the right to participate in all future NASS elections and to play a full part in the affairs of the Union.

The payment of pool money is governed by Rule 195 of the Orders and Rules of Racing. Non compliance is a breach which could result in disciplinary action by the Jockey Club.

The Racing Industry Accident Benefit Scheme (RIABS) is funded by licensed and permitted trainers and by contributions from stable staff. The scheme provides for benefits to eligible persons following accidental injury, disablement or death arising out of, whilst carrying out duties for a licensed trainer,including bona fide journeys between normal place of residence and place of work. The scheme does not cover race riding accidents or accidents, which occur while on, or traveling to and from a racecourse when engaged to ride.

The Agreement provides for a Racing Industry Minimum Rates of Pay Structure and certain standard conditions of employment for stable staff employed by trainers in the racing industry. It covers the period from 1st October 2007 to 30th September 2008.
